FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

What's In a Name?

Club Aséan's name does not refer to anything, it's really only a marketing name like Exxon. There's a slight French flavor because the club was modeled after other successful organizations like Club Med, the Commonwealth Club, Outdoors Unlimited, The Sierra Club, and Outward Bound.

What is an A.O.? (Activity Organizer?)

A.O. is short for Aséan Organisateur, the high energy internationales who make things happen in Club Aséan, your leaders, activity organizers, movers and shakers. They provide the spirit, energy, direction and focus necessary to make individual activities successful. Please get to know them and help them out, they do a great deal of work to make sure the activities are successful and that you will have a good time as you learn and grow. A.O.'s are like G.O.'s (or Gentile Organisateurs) in Club Med resorts.

Why should I join?

It's not a requirement to join Club Aséan to participate, but if you do:

A Volunteer Organization

Volunteers make the Aséan World go around! Please remember that Club Aséan is a volunteer organization, all its officers and A.O.'s donate their time and energy for the good of the club in the fulfillment of its mission. Club Aséan is an approved California non-profit corporation, no single individual or entity benefits financially from its operation and all funds are irrevocably dedicated to non-profit organizations under the California non-profit incorporation law. Officers and A.O.'s do not receive a salary, but their operational expenses are reimbursed by the club. Please be patient with A.O.'s and officers, after all, they are all only volunteers. Please support them and help them out.

There are a few other activities organizations out there but their purpose is profit, usually to a few key individuals or to a favored business operation. Club Aséan continues to try to do the right thing for its members and the community, unselfishly trying to have a positive impact in the community and your lives.

Members are encouraged to become Aséan Organisateurs (A.O.'s) in the club, to share a particular interest area with others, or to share their expertise so that others may grow in unfamiliar interest areas. So please do step forward and work with an experienced A.O. to learn a little about leadership and organization of an activity. It's a great way to give something back to the club.

Democracy at Work

Leadership in the club comes from individuals who wish to step forward and serve in the club as an officer. This is strongly encouraged. The members each year elect their executive officers and half of the executive directors, by mail-in ballot or usually culminating at an election party. One month later there is an installation dinner to recognize outgoing officers and key contributors, and to install the new board. No one individual dominates or controls Club Aséan or its leadership, it is truly independent and elected democratically.

Membership Information

Initial Membership is a nominal $19 donation, and the renewal membership is only $15 donation per year. Members receive a free 3-month extension credit to their membership for each referred new member.
Membership Form

Remember, the membership fee helps support the concept of Club Aséan as well as helping to defray the costs of operating a large, voluntary participation organization which is doing so much . . .

Membership in Club Aséan is predominantly Asian-American and recent immigrants, but Club Aséan membership is open to everyone. Members range in age from 16 to 60. Most are in there 20's and 30's and the majority of our members are single, but there continues to be a rising proportion of married couples in the club. Membership is primarily from the Northern California area and concentrated heavily in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The organization grew up out of the Asian-American community and the majority of members are Asian, but there are no restrictions on joining, no ethnicity requirements, and many nationalities are represented in Club Aséan, a diverse organization. A fun multi-ethnic, multicultural non-profit group.

Aséan members receive reduced prices on activities from non-members. Please don't think of your membership fee as paying for "so many activities", but rather as a way to support the club, its philosophy, values, and concepts, its mission, and our members.

Activities

To give you a flavor of Club Aséan's other activities, here's a listing of the wide variety of events, sometimes as many as 5 per week. These are activities that have been done in the past, and may or may not be done in the future, but many are planned for in the future based on membership interest, demand, or A.O. interest.

Most activities are designed to be small, close and personal.

History

Originally from the
CCNAA Chien Tan Program, Club Aséan was established in 1984, but actually originated from the 1980 Taiwan Study Tour. The group developed a special comraderie by travelling around Taiwan and learning about Chinese language and culture. To keep the comraderie alive the group planned a reunion with a dinner/dance at MarineWorld and a Tahoe Ski Trip over the holidays that same year. This continued into the next year with volleyball, movies and dinner gatherings, coordinated travel plans, and community service activities. The year after this the group added river rafting (float trip), picnics, canoeing, and wine tasting. The third year the group expanded to more parties and social gatherings, white-water rafting, horseback riding, cross-country, camping, hiking trips, and ice skating. Originally it was in November, 1983 when Asian Week editor Pat Anderson came out to cover an interesting new group, "Asian Network", the club's original name. But another group that was doing profit-making dances started using the same name so the club started to search out for a new, unique name to be known by. In 1984, founders Arthur Hsi and Gilbert Lee took the group public as "Club Aséan" with an accent over the É, giving a French flair for the name of this exciting new group. Word seemed to spread and newspapers started writing about Club Aséan, magazine articles appeared (ASIAM Magazine, TransPacific, Rice to name a few, the club was featured on KTVU-Channel 2, and several radio interviews (including KFRC) too.

In 1984 the group opened up its membership to others not on the original Taiwan study tours and the group went public because of all the publicity it was receiving. The group has been active in the community, helping numerous community organizations. In 1987 Club Aséan worked with Self-Help for the Elderly to start and found the Golden Gait Walkathon which raised $65,000 its first year, $6000 alone from Club Aséan. Other notable fund raisers for the community include several charity basketball games with members of Club Aséan, "Team ASÉAN" playing members of the Superbowl Champs, the San Francisco 49ers . The City and County of San Francisco Board of Supervisors presented Club Aséan with a Certificate of Honor with Distinction for its work with the community. The Bay Area Chinese Students Association also presented an award to Club Aséan in acknowledgement of club members help in a number of their activities. The Asian Business League of Silicon Valley also presented Club Aséan with a Certificate of Appreciation for assistance in a number of ABL-SV activities. On Lok Senior Health Services also presented Club Aséan with an award recognizing its "Service to the Frail Elderly".

Success and Leadership Emphasis

Personal Growth in Club Aséan is a higher level goal of the club. "We want all our members to grow and be successful." Thus many activities may have an educational, experiential learning emphasis. Many social activities help members develop interpersonal skills. Toastmasters sections and officers learn communication skills. The White-Water Rafting program promotes teamwork, alignment, safety, responsibility, and leadership skills.

Leadership Series

Internet Distribution of the Leadership Series, articles on success, leadership, and management are distributed on a regular basis to help grow members in these areas. Leader vs. Manager (under construction).

Special Interest Groups (SIG's)

Members may have an area they are especially fond of. They want to share their interest/hobbies with other members. Thus they serve as a SIG leader to foster interest, personal growth, skill development in a specific area.
